What it covers
The examination measures how you see at every distance and checks for myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. It also includes binocular testing, which looks at whether the two eyes are cooperating properly — an aspect often overlooked, yet responsible for a great many headaches and a great deal of eye strain.
We always start from your real habits — work, driving, sport, hours in front of a screen — because the right correction depends on how you use your sight, not only on how much you see.
When to book one
It is worth repeating at regular intervals, and any time you notice blurring, headaches, fatigue, or difficulty reading and driving. In school-age children it deserves particular attention: an uncorrected defect usually presents as trouble at school before it presents as a complaint about sight.
An optometric test, not a medical examination
An optometric assessment evaluates visual function and does not replace an eye examination by an ophthalmologist, which investigates the health of the structures of the eye. When signs emerge that call for medical attention, we tell you.
