What myopia is
In a short-sighted eye, with accommodation relaxed, the focus falls in front of the retina. Distance vision loses sharpness while near vision stays clear. It is corrected with a negative lens, which brings the focus back onto the retina.
It occurs when the eyeball is longer than normal or, less often, when the eye's own lens system is too powerful.
Growing eyes, growing myopia
Through childhood and adolescence myopia can progress quickly. Tracking it and slowing it down matters, because high myopia in adulthood raises the risk of certain retinal complications.

An optometric assessment evaluates visual function and does not replace an examination by an ophthalmologist. Diagnosis and treatment remain the responsibility of a medical eye specialist, and we work alongside one whenever that is needed.
