Dry eye

Burning, redness and a gritty feeling: dry eye comes from a tear film that is either insufficient or of altered quality.

Common causes

Long stretches at a computer reduce how often you blink and speed up tear evaporation. Air conditioning, heating, wind and altitude all make it worse. Some medications and hormonal changes play a part too.

What helps

Artificial tears, regular breaks from the screen and attention to humidity in the room are the first remedies. For contact lens wearers, revisiting the material and the replacement schedule often makes the difference. If the discomfort persists, it should be looked at by an ophthalmologist.

An optometric assessment evaluates visual function and does not replace an examination by an ophthalmologist. Diagnosis and treatment remain the responsibility of a medical eye specialist, and we work alongside one whenever that is needed.
